Philanthropic Scans, Surveys and Guidelines

In addition to developing analyses and reports, Kronley & Associates has worked with philanthropic organizations and associations to undertake detailed scans of issues. The scans and the recommendations that accompany them enable clients to benchmark their work against other funders and to develop grantmaking initiatives. We have performed such scans for, among others, the Rockefeller Foundation, Baptist Community Ministries and the Wallace Funds.

May 2004 saw the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which led to the desegregation of public schools. This milestone was a poignant moment for all committed to promoting equity in education, including the Rockefeller Foundation, which has been dedicated to increasing educational opportunities since its founding. In recognition of the anniversary, to provide a look back at accomplishments and a review of the hurdles that remain, the Foundation supported a variety of activities including a national symposium, a forum and other gatherings, the preparation and dissemination of reports and other documents, the development of educational materials and the production of various media pieces.

To inform the Foundation's efforts, Kronley & Associates completed an extensive scan of Brown-related activities. The scan focused on philanthropic, educational and legal organizations. Among other things, the firm undertook research, reviewed documents and other materials, and conducted a series of interviews.

Kronley & Associates was selected by the Southeastern Council of Foundations, a regional affinity group of grantmakers, to design, administer and analyze an exhaustive survey of the organization's membership. This was the first such assessment the Council undertook, and our findings and recommendations provided the organization with information about opportunities for new initiatives and strategic adjustments in current programs, which are now being implemented.
