Over the last decade, Coaching Corps (formerly Team-Up for Youth) has had significant impact on young people throughout California by developing and enhancing quality afterschool sports opportunities for underserved populations – typically girls, low-income and non-white youth.  Coaching Corps trains college students to coach in after-school sports programs, places them and provides them with ongoing support.

 

All parties benefit from the Coaching Corps approach: (1) colleges and universities provide meaningful service experiences to their students; (2) student coaches can develop leadership skills and  broaden their exposure to “real-world” responsibilities and opportunities; (3) partnerships forge ties between educational institutions and community organizations, and; (4) youth participants reap physical fitness benefits that are increasingly associated with academic success, better health, diminished risk of pregnancy, and improved self-esteem -- all critical preconditions for being healthier, more productive and independent adults.

 

Based on the success of its program in initial California sites, Coaching Corps seeks to expand. It has engaged Kronley & Associates to facilitate planning for the scale-up effort. The firm has surfaced critical assumptions about Coaching Corps’ value and market, engaged key stakeholders and helped engender agreement about scale-up strategies. Kronley & Associates has helped Coaching Corps  assess the benefits and risks of expansion and to address core issues – including the attributes, impact and costs of successful partnerships with after-school programs, and the role, responsibilities and resources required of Coaching Corps. The firm developed a plan, approved by the board in June 2011, that identifies and clarifies essential program elements and how to standardize them, focuses on key strategies, provides a framework for funding, defines the pace of replication, and shows how the work will be assessed. The plan will enable Coaching Corps to determine and partner with California universities ready to expand and will provide strategic tools to nurture potential new Coaching Corps sites. Finally, the plan surfaces a pathway for national expansion. The firm has helped Coaching Corps implement and streamline data collection and analysis, and continues to advise the team on plan implementation to ensure the success of program growth.
